The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A — universally known as the Brasileirão — is the top professional football league in Brazil, the nation that has produced more World Cup winners and global football icons than any other country on earth. The league adopted its current national round-robin structure in 1971, though Brazilian club football has a much longer, regionally organized history before that.
The Brasileirão is contested by 20 clubs in a double round-robin format — every club plays every other club home and away across 38 rounds. Unlike many major leagues, there are no play-offs or finals: the champion is simply the club that finishes with the most points after all 38 rounds, a format that rewards consistency across an entire calendar year rather than a single knockout moment. The bottom four clubs are relegated to Série B.
Palmeiras hold the record for the most Brasileirão titles under the modern format, with Santos and Flamengo among the league's other most decorated clubs historically. Flamengo itself is recognized as having the largest and most passionate fanbase in Brazil and one of the biggest in the world, with support cutting across every region of the country.
Brazilian football's rivalries are fierce and regional: Fla-Flu (Flamengo vs Fluminense) defines Rio de Janeiro, the Choque-Rei (Corinthians vs Palmeiras) and Majestoso (Corinthians vs São Paulo) dominate São Paulo, and Grenal (Grêmio vs Internacional) is the heartbeat of Rio Grande do Sul. The Brasileirão remains one of the best places in the world to watch raw, passionate, unfiltered football culture.
