The Primeira Liga (currently sponsored as Liga Portugal Betclic) is the top professional football league in Portugal, with organized national competition dating back to 1934. It is governed by the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional (Liga Portugal) and is one of Europe's most respected top-flight leagues despite Portugal's relatively small population.
The league is contested by 18 clubs across 34 matchdays from August to May. The bottom two clubs are automatically relegated to Liga Portugal 2, while the 16th-placed side enters a two-legged promotion/relegation playoff. Portuguese football is dominated by "Os Três Grandes" — the Big Three — Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting CP, who between them have won virtually every league title in the competition's history.
Portuguese clubs have enjoyed real European success: FC Porto famously won the UEFA Champions League in 2004 under a young José Mourinho, having also lifted the trophy in 1987. Benfica won it twice in the early 1960s (1961, 1962) under Béla Guttmann. All three of the Big Three have also won the UEFA Europa League / UEFA Cup at various points.
The Primeira Liga's biggest modern reputation is as a launchpad for elite talent. A remarkable list of superstars passed through Portuguese academies and top-flight football before becoming global names — most famously Cristiano Ronaldo at Sporting CP, alongside modern stars like Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, João Félix and Rúben Dias.
