The EFL Championship is the second tier of the English football league system, sitting directly below the Premier League. It took its current name in 2004, when the old Football League First Division was rebranded as part of a wider restructuring of English football's divisional names.
The Championship is contested by 24 clubs across a gruelling 46-match season — home and away against every other club — widely considered one of the most physically and mentally demanding leagues in world football due to its packed fixture list and famously unpredictable results. The top two clubs are automatically promoted to the Premier League, while clubs finishing 3rd to 6th enter the play-offs — a knockout mini-tournament that ends with a single final at Wembley Stadium.
That play-off final has earned a global reputation as the "richest match in world football." Because promotion to the Premier League is worth well over £150-200 million in broadcast revenue, prize money and commercial upside, a single 90 minutes (or penalty shootout) at Wembley can transform a club's finances overnight.
The bottom three clubs are relegated to League One. The Championship is also known for attracting huge, passionate crowds — several clubs regularly outdraw Premier League sides — and for being a stepping stone (or occasional resting place) for historic English clubs like Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland and Norwich City.
