The UEFA Champions League (UCL) is the most prestigious club football competition in the world. Originally known as the European Cup, it was launched in 1955 and rebranded as the Champions League in 1992 when it adopted the familiar group-stage format that made it a global phenomenon.
From the 2024/25 season, UEFA replaced the traditional group stage with a brand-new 36-team league phase. Each club plays 8 matches against 8 different opponents. The top 8 advance directly to the round of 16, clubs ranked 9–24 enter a knockout playoff round, and the bottom 12 are eliminated. This format delivers more high-stakes matches and fewer dead rubbers.
Real Madrid are the most successful club in the competition's history with 15 titles. They won their 15th in 2024, beating Borussia Dortmund 2–0 at Wembley. AC Milan are second with 7 titles, followed by Liverpool and Bayern Munich with 6 each.
The iconic anthem — composed by Tony Britten based on Handel's Zadok the Priest — plays before every match, making it one of the most recognisable pieces of music in sport. FIFAScoring.com tracks every UCL match live, from the August qualifying rounds all the way to the May final.
