The Eredivisie (Dutch for "Honour Division") is the top professional football league in the Netherlands, founded in 1956. Despite being a smaller nation by population, the Netherlands has produced some of the most influential footballers and tactical innovations in the sport's history — largely through clubs in this league.
The league is contested by 18 clubs across 34 matchdays from August to May. The bottom club is automatically relegated to the Eerste Divisie, while the 16th and 17th-placed clubs enter multi-team playoffs for their survival. The league is known for its high-tempo, attacking football — a direct legacy of Total Football (Totaalvoetbal), the tactical revolution pioneered by Ajax and coach Rinus Michels in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The Big Three — Ajax (36 titles), PSV Eindhoven (25 titles) and Feyenoord (16 titles) — have dominated Dutch football, but the league has in recent years become more competitive, with AZ Alkmaar and FC Utrecht regularly challenging the traditional hierarchy.
Ajax's European peak came in the early 1970s with three consecutive European Cups (1971, 1972, 1973) and again in the 1990s (1992, 1995). No Eredivisie club has won the European/Champions Cup since Ajax's 1995 victory. The league's real legacy is in the players it produces — from Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten to Arjen Robben, Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt.
