Ligue 1 (officially Ligue 1 McDonald's for sponsorship purposes) is the top professional football league in France, founded in 1932 under the name Division Professionnelle before being rebranded as Ligue 1 in 2002. It is one of Europe's five major football leagues and is governed by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP).
From the 2023/24 season, Ligue 1 was reduced from 20 to 18 clubs to reduce fixture congestion, improve match quality and give clubs more preparation time for European competition. The league now runs across 34 matchdays producing 306 total matches per season from August to May. The bottom two clubs are relegated, and the 16th-placed side enters a playoff.
Paris Saint-Germain have been the defining force of modern French football. Backed by Qatari ownership from 2011, PSG assembled a roster that has included Zlatan Ibrahimović, Neymar, Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, winning 12 Ligue 1 titles since 2013. However, Saint-Étienne remain the all-time most successful club with 10 championship titles from the pre-PSG era.
The league's fiercest rivalry is Le Classique — PSG vs Olympique de Marseille — a fixture charged with regional pride, political undertones and genuine footballing quality. Marseille remain the only French club to have won the UEFA Champions League, claiming the title in 1993.
