The Bundesliga (officially 1. Bundesliga) is the top professional football league in Germany, founded in 1963. It is one of Europe's most-watched domestic leagues, renowned for its electric atmospheres, world-class talent and some of the highest average attendances in global football — regularly exceeding 43,000 fans per game, the highest of any league on Earth.
The league is played by 18 clubs across 34 matchdays, producing 306 total matches per season — running from August to May. The bottom two clubs are automatically relegated to 2. Bundesliga; the 16th-placed club enters a playoff against the third-place 2. Bundesliga side.
Bayern Munich are the dominant force with a record 33 league titles, including an unprecedented 11 consecutive championships from 2013 to 2023. Borussia Dortmund are their fiercest rivals, and Bayer Leverkusen famously ended Bayern's streak in 2024, becoming champions for the first time in their history — going the entire season unbeaten.
The Bundesliga is also known for producing elite coaches: Jürgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann all made their names in Germany's top flight.
