Serie A (officially Serie A TIM for sponsorship purposes) is the top professional football league in Italy, founded in 1929. Known as Calcio — Italian for "football" — the league is one of the oldest and most decorated in European football history, producing some of the game's greatest players, coaches and tactical innovations.
The league is contested by 20 clubs across 38 matchdays, producing 380 total matches per season from August to May. The bottom three clubs are relegated to Serie B, with three Serie B sides promoted in their place.
Juventus lead all-time with 36 Scudetti (league titles), including an unprecedented run of 9 consecutive titles from 2012 to 2020 — a record of dominance unseen in any major European league. Inter Milan ended that streak in 2021 and have since been the dominant force, winning the title again in 2024 in their 20th Scudetto season.
Serie A is also home to two of the greatest derbies in football: the Derby d'Italia (Juventus vs Inter Milan) — considered the most important match in Italian club football — and the Derby della Madonnina (AC Milan vs Inter Milan), where two of Europe's most decorated clubs share the same iconic stadium, San Siro.
